People think they can smell their own breath by breathing into their hand and sniffing but the truth is, you can't smell your own breath. So you may be offending someone and you just don't know it.
Now that you know a little more about bad breath, let's talk about products on the market that are designed to treat bad breath, what they do and, more importantly, what they don't do. Then you'll have a better understanding of how SmartMouth can be so much more effective.
Products Designed to Treat Bad Breath
Gums, Mints, Breath Sprays and Breath Strips: Gums, mints, breath sprays and breath strips all provide a wonderful burst of freshness and flavor throughout the day. But they don't really do much for bad breath. They simply mask odor and are very short term at best.
Brushing and Flossing: Brushing and flossing are very healthy for everyone and definitely help to refresh your mouth. However, you can't brush and floss at night and wake up in the morning with no morning breath. So while they're very healthy for you, they don't provide long-term fresh breath.
Tongue Cleaners: Just like brushing and flossing, tongue cleaners are very healthy to use and many of the germs that cause bad breath are found on the back 1/3 of the tongue. So tongue cleaners, while they don't provide long-term fresh breath on their own, are definitely healthy to use.

Generation 1 = Germ Killers - e.g. Listerine, Crest Pro Health, Scope
The first generation of mouthwashes to be developed was the germ killers - we've all heard "kills the germs that cause bad breath". They do kill some of the germs, but they don't kill all of them. And germs grow back quickly, so they can continue to produce those foul-smelling bad breath gases. Germ killers do nothing to actually eliminate bad breath, they simply attempt to mask it. Their effect is short-term at best.
Generation 2 = Odor Eliminators - e.g. TheraBreath, Closys II
Generation 2 consists of odor eliminators, mostly oxidizers. They actually eliminate bad breath when you rinse with them, making them more effective than Generation 1 mouthwashes. However, they don't do anything to the germs to stop them from producing new bad breath so they also work shorter term. Even if the Generation 2 products also kill some of the germs, like Generation 1 products, the germs grow back quickly so they only provide shorter term relief.
Generation 3 = Elimination and Prevention - e.g. SmartMouth
